This program is designed to encourage innovative and sustained growth of the Japanese Studies field in the United States.

Applications that create tenured or tenure-track positions in Japanese Studies will be given strong priority. Small institutions, newly established institutions, and institutions without an established program of Japanese Studies at the graduate level are highly encouraged to apply.

JF now requires a Concept Paper be submitted prior to the Full Proposal Application. Concept Papers must be completed using the Concept Paper Form and are due no later than October 31, 2023.

Projects must commence between April 1, 2024 and March 31, 2025, for a duration of up to three years. The maximum amount of the grant request from the Japan Foundation is $150,000 per year.

The application must be received by the Japan Foundation, New York by email or post no later than Friday, December 1, 2023.
