| Outline | This grant supports the further development of Visualizing Cultures, MIT’s innovative web database that combines images, video and text into interactive units to enhance the scholarship and teaching of Japan. Funding will be used for the recruitment of scholars, through personal contacts and in an international conference to engage in digital projects of an historical nature; broaden collaboration with a range of public and private institutions that have collections which have been largely inaccessible to date; and work closely with pre-college curriculum specialists to make all new content accessible at the high school level. |

| Outline | This grant supports the hiring of a new Japanese History Professor who is focused on the period since the Meiji Restoration; the establishment of three Summer Institutes designed to bring together graduate students with top scholars in the field around a specific theme tying the political and the cultural that changes each year but enhance the cultural study of Japan in history; the establishment of three 2-quarter Visiting Professorships designed to increase faculty and student interaction with Japanese Studies specialists normally employed in Japan; graduate student support through scholarships; the establishment of a two-year Faculty Fellow; and library development. |

| Outline | This grant supports the enhancement of the “Visiting Scholar in Japanese Literature Program,” by inviting two scholars from Japan annually to participate in seminars open to scholars and students at nearby institutions as well as to student and faculty at UW The scholars will also travel to institutions in the Pacific Northwest and participate in outreach lectures and seminar meetings. |

| Outline | This grant will support two faculty development workshops to be hosted on the U.S. mainland in cooperation with colleges and universities in the ASDP network. Each 3-day workshop will include lecture/discussion sessions featuring Japan area studies specialists; group discussions with presenters aimed at identifying Japan-focused teaching resources and strategies; and a discussion in which participants will work in disciplinary groups to develop strategies for engaging Japanese content in the core curriculum. Each workshop will feature four Japan studies specialists as presenting faculty, one of whom will serve as the workshop academic director. |
