| Outline | This grant will support Brown University to recruit an assistant-rank professor in Japanese Buddhism to be held jointly in the department of East Asian Studies and Religious Studies. Brown is embarking on a multi-year strategic plan to situate the university as a leader in scholarship and teaching on East Asia (primarily Japan, China and Korea) with an emphasis on pre-modern periods. This grant will also help Brown grow its resources on Japan and Japanese Buddhism to ensure that the new professor has a robust archive of material and that the collection is strengthened for the broader university community. |

| Outline | This grant will support Ohio State University to recruit two new tenure-track professors, one in Japanese History and one in Japanese Linguistics. These hires will play a critical role in OSU’s efforts to remain among the premier institutions for Japanese Studies in the Midwest. OSU has a long record of success in the field, having awarded the second largest number of BA degrees in East Asian Languages (2020-24) in the country, for example, and overseeing 16 university partnerships in Japan. |

| Outline | This grant will support Randolph-Macon College in creating a new, permanent, tenure-track faculty line in Japanese Studies. A permanent faculty appointment will allow full staffing of needed courses in Japanese Studies. The project builds on more than a decade of partnership with institutions in Japan – including Rikkyo University, Kansai Gaidai University, and Ishinomaki Senshu University – and on established exchange programs such as the TOMODACHI Initiative and KAKEHASHI Program. |
