OutlineThis grant will fund the first years of Hunter College Japanese Program’s pioneering Japanese Language and Culture Major, which will be offered beginning in Fall 2023, and be the first of its kind in the NYC area. This funding will enable the program to retain a third full-time, culture-focused, faculty member, who will work together with faculty members in major advising and program development initiatives.

OutlineThis grant will support the hire of a full-time faculty members who will create additional courses in Japanese Studies and develop the curriculum needed for a major. A World Languages Major with a concentration in Japanese Studies will offer students additional opportunities for in-depth study of Japanese culture and expand study of Japanese language from three years to four years. The tenure-track assistant professor will teach existing courses, create new offerings in Japanese Studies and lay the groundwork for the new major. This will help meet the continuing demand for courses and to develop a much-needed major program.

OutlineThis grant will support a new tenure-track assistant professor of Japanese Language and Premodern Literature with a preferred subfield in Digital Humanities in the department of East Asian Studies at Oberlin College. The new tenure-track faculty in East Asian Studies will expand Japanese Studies at Oberlin and contribute to the field through research and contextualization of Oberlin’s significant Japanese art and book collections. They also will engage in faculty collaboration with the College Museum and Library in advancing digital humanities initiatives.
