OutlineThis grant supports the establishment of the first permanent Gagaku-Hougaku training program for Western students of music in the US. The goal is for a 10 year plan for the stabilization of the Columbia faculty and NYC resident adjunct instrumental instructors, and administration of public concerts; composer’s workshops; database for Scores and Performers of new music for Japanese instruments; K-12 outreach; and internet instruction.

Project TitlePre-modern Japanese Culture and Regional Outreach

OutlineThis grant supports the hiring of two positions (one faculty and one staff), and workshops/seminars that accompany each position. The faculty position will open a line in pre-modern Japanese culture, which will assist in the launching of an undergraduate major in Japanese studies. The regional outreach program coordinator will expand the outreach program throughout Michigan and the Midwest buy organizing a series of workshops and seminars.
ProjectsSearch and hiring of pre-modern Japan assistant professor – To begin in the fall, 2012
Regional Outreach Network Initiative- creating a network of local institutions, libraries, museums, Japan America Society, throughout the state of Michigan and into the Midwest. Joint projects would include cultural events, film and lecture series, among others.
Regional Outreach Workshop- Start of an annual workshop to develop regional ties and opportunities.

OutlineThis grant supports the hiring of a tenure-track position in Japanese language and literature. In addition, Furman will host an academic conference, and support the expansion of public education programming through a series of public talks and a symposium that explores the future role of Japan in the international arena. The grant also supports interdisciplinary course development on Japan within the university by supporting travel and study trips for students to Japan. Finally, it provides students with support for summer internship opportunities in Japan.

OutlineThis grant supports the hiring of a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Japanese Literature. This will assist in the development of an undergraduate major in Japanese studies. This expansion is part of a larger development of the Asian Studies program, with the addition of faculty in Chinese language and area studies.

OutlineThis grant helps support a three- year project, Japan in Global Contexts. Each year will focus on a different topic: 1) Writing, Translating, Print Culture in Japan and East Asia; 2) Japan and Global Buddhism; and 3) Empire, War, and After. Each yea’s events will include at least (i) one seminar or workshop for university and community college faculty; (ii) one guest speaker or workshop for the university community; (iii) one exhibit at both the ASU Art Museum and the Phoenix Art Museum; and (iv) a film series based on the topic for the year for students and a general audience.

Project TitleCombining Japanese Studies with Preparation for a Business Career: A Distinct Model for Higher Education Engagement with Japan

OutlineThis grant supports the creation of a new interdisciplinary program in East Asian Business with a specialization on Japan. Support will be provided toward the hiring of a new faculty position in East Asian Business with a Japan specialization, including the development of new courses on business and economics and faculty workshops to establish the framework for this curriculum. There will also be faculty study tours to Japan as well as study abroad and field study for students.

OutlineThis grant helps support the creation of a Triangle Center for Japanese studies among the universities of Duke, North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State. The Center will aim to nurture and develop a leading community of scholars in Japan studies, to offer a comprehensive center of support for the scholarly community throughout the southeast and to provide first-ranked offering to undergraduate and graduate students across the three campuses. This will be accomplished through speaker and study group support, research and travel support, library and web support, and organization of a major conference and related publication

Project TitleBridging Japan and the United States through Culture and Environment
Grant Period2012/1/1-2014/8/31
OutlineThis grant helps support an educational pipeline for students in Michigan and Shiga prefecture with a focus on Japan’s culture and environment. This will be accomplished though a visiting scholar program, in which the Japanese scholar will teach a university course and also mentor local high school students. Support will also be given toward study abroad and intern opportunities for students in the Environmental Science in Japan (ESJ) program at JCMU/Hikone. One additional component will be a Career Bridge Internship Program, which will allow Michigan college students the opportunity to intern at a Japanese company.
