Outline Building Global Japanese Studies at Bard College will support a new Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Japanese, a specialist in the field of modern literature, cultural studies, media studies, or a related discipline, whose work is rooted in transnational perspective and reflects recent developments towards global Japanese studies. Expertise in or amongst the fields of translation studies, diasporic studies, or Southeast Asian studies will fill important curricular gaps at Bard and link up with exciting directions in the field nationally and internationally. In addition to providing crucial reinforcement to make Bard’s Japanese program sturdy and sustainable, the new faculty member will more than double the total number of offerings.

Outline This grant will support a new tenure-track assistant, associate, or full professor of Japanese Language and Culture in the department of Language, Literature, and Culture at Clark University. The preference will be for candidates whose research interests focus on Japanese contemporary culture and language, or those who can forge links between Japan’s traditional/historical cultural heritage and contemporary culture and language. The new tenure-track faculty in Japanese language and culture will serve as an anchor to relaunch Clark University’s Japanese Studies program by revamping the institution’s offerings beyond language courses, introducing new pedagogy, and offering new cultural and literary courses that are of interest to students at Clark.
