Prerequisite You are expected to:

  • have completed JF A1(1) Introductory Japanese or equivalent
  • be able to read hiragana words
  • be able to give greetings and use basic daily phrases
  • be able to talk about where you are from, what you do, what food you like, etc. using basic phrases
DescriptionLearn useful expressions and basic phrases in everyday contexts such as talking about yourself, family, food, residence, daily routine, schedule, hobbies, etc. Katakana and basic kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and practiced. Japanese culture will also be introduced throughout the course.

GoalsUpon successful completion of this class, you will be able to:

  • talk about such topics as yourself, family, food, residence, daily routine, schedule, hobbies, etc.
  • read short, simple phrases and sentences such as someone’s self-introduction, schedule, invitation, restaurant menu, etc.
  • write short, simple phrases and sentences about yourself, your family, residence, hobbies, etc.
  • read and write hiragana and katakana words related to the topics
  • recognize approximately 20 basic kanji characters and related words such as numbers and days of the week, etc.


A2-1 (3) Elementary Japanese

PrerequisiteYou are expected to:

  • have completed JF A2-1(2) Elementary Japanese or equivalent
  • be able to describe, ask and answer simple questions about yourself, what you do, where you live, food you like, hobbies, daily routine, weekend activities, etc.
  • be able to handle simple expressions of numbers, quantities, costs and time
  • be able to read and understand simple brief texts written in hiragana, katakana and very basic kanji on such topics as someone’s self-introduction, hobbies, schedule, weekend activities etc.
  • be able to write simple phrases and sentences about yourself, where you live and what you do using hiragana and katakana
  • be able to read and understand approximately 50 kanji characters and related words such as numbers, days of the week, simple verbs and adjectives
DescriptionThis course targets developing skills to interact in everyday contexts such as learning foreign languages and cultures, planning and having a picnic, talking about your work etc. Kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and practiced. Japanese culture will also be an important thread throughout the course.

  • talk about such topics as learning foreign languages and cultures, having a picnic, your work, etc.
  • read short, simple sentences such as advertisements, text messages, emails and blog entries.
  • write short, simple sentences such as notes to a friend, emails and blog entries related to the topics.
  • read approximately 50 kanji words related to the topics.


A2-2 (1) Elementary Japanese

  • be able to express your opinions, quote what someone said, and modify a noun using short (plain) forms of verbs, adjectives and nouns
  • be able to handle simple expressions of numbers, quantities, costs and time
  • be able to read and understand simple brief texts written in hiragana, katakana and basic kanji
  • be able to write simple phrases and sentences about your everyday life using hiragana, katakana and basic kanji
  • be able to read and understand approximately 200 kanji characters and relative words related to the daily topics

A2/B1(1) Pre-Intermediate Japanese

  • have completed JF A2-2(4) Elementary Japanese or equivalent
  • be able to interact on such topics as living or working conditions, daily routines, likes/dislikes, plans, personal experiences, etc. in simple phrases and sentences
  • be able to understand short, simple texts on familiar matters which consist of high frequency everyday language
  • be able to write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like ‘and’, ‘but’, etc.
  • be able to use simple grammar and structures, though still might make some mistakes
  • be able to read and understand approximately 250 kanji characters and relative words related to the daily topics
DescriptionA2/B1 Pre-Intermediate Japanese is designed to develop conversational skills and grammatical accuracy while reviewing the contents of A2 classes. Topics include going to see a sport game with your friends, ideal living environment, one’s comfort food, etc. , etc. Kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and practiced. Japanese culture will be an important thread throughout the course.

DescriptionB1 Intermediate Japanese is designed to develop skills to sustain a reasonably fluent conversation in detail on a variety of subjects. The main topic will be cultural events and festivals in Japan and in your country. Through various types of materials, students will work on communicating in both spoken and written language. Kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant vocabulary, expressions and grammar will be introduced and practiced.

  • talk about your experience and impressions of a festival, event, etc.
  • describe the origin and highlights of a festival or event using simple terms.
  • read a blog entry about a festival or event and understand the writer’s experiences and impressions.
  • write about your experiences and impressions of a festival or event in simple terms


B1-2 Intermediate Japanese Topic G

  • have completed JF B1-1 Pre-intermediate Japanese courses or equivalent.
  • be able to use a wide range of simple language to deal with most situations likely to arise while traveling, and enter unprepared into conversation on familiar topics.
  • be able to express personal opinions and exchange information on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life.
  • be able to recognize significant points in straightforward newspaper articles, blog entries etc. on familiar subjects.
  • be able to compose a piece of writing such as a blog entry describing events, experiences, and feelings with a certain degree of detail.
  • be able to use grammar patterns associated with everyday situations reasonably accurately.
  • be able to read and understand approximately 500 kanji and related vocabulary used in everyday context
DescriptionThis course is designed for students to gain skills to communicate with some confidence on both routine and non-routine matters and express thoughts on more abstract topics. The main topics will be cross-cultural experiences, different ways of expressing what you want, and Japanese people and religion. Through various types of materials, students will work on communicating in both spoken and written language. Kanji words related to the topics as well as relevant vocabulary, expressions and grammar will be introduced and practiced.

  • read and understand the main points of authentic texts such as a blog entry, magazine article, essay, etc.
  • construct sentences for emails, blog entries, etc. including some detail.
