OutlineThis grant will support Carleton College to develop curricular resources and materials on a collection of premodern and modern Japanese maps. Project outcomes include developing a new course on Japanese cartography that emphasizes object-based, experiential learning, and academic civic engagement; inviting specialists of Japanese cartography from both the United States and Japan to visit Carleton and contribute to the course; digitizing key maps to build an online exhibit of maps; and creating pedagogical materials that can be used not only by college instructors but also by K-12 teachers.
