Project Title | Enhancing Japanese Studies in the U.S.: A Focus on Hokkaido |
Grant Period | 2021/03/31-2022/03/25 |
Outline | This grant supports the participation of 22 faculty from community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities throughout the United States, which do not have established Asian Studies programs, to join an innovative workshop, “Hokkaido 2020: Diversity, Transformation, Renewal.” The workshop will explore the impact of the natural environment on Hokkaido’s history, the “frontier” legacy of Japanese settlers, and offer a nuanced understanding of Ainu society and culture. Participants will rely on “object-based learning” and “mining the museum” methodologies to engage with Hokkaido’s material culture. The grant also supports travel for participants to disseminate their findings from the workshop at a conference in Hawaii.
