OutlineThis grant supports a collaborative project between the Penn Forum on Japan, the Meiji Jingu Intercultural Research Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia to commemorate the historical ties between the city of Philadelphia and nineteenth century Japan. Specifically, this grant supports the international symposium “The Other Meiji: Philadelphia and ‘Asiatic’ Japan”. The project also includes exhibitions at the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and cultural and educational events.

OutlineThis grant supports The Symposia for Midwest Researchers in Japanese Studies, which aims to enhance the development of Japanese Studies research by faculty at American universities, particularly those located in the Midwest. Symposia will be held four times annually and will enable scholars in the region to meet, discuss ongoing research in a collegial atmosphere, and deepen their connections with the Japanese Studies community.
