OutlineThis grant supports Japanese cultural workshops and lectures that highlight the work of Antioch College alumni in the fields of kyogen, butoh, washi, and sado (chado). The workshops and lectures are open to students, faculty, and the community, as part of Antioch’s efforts to increase community interest in Japan and rebuild its formerly robust Japanese program.

Project TitleJapanese Language Text Mining: Digital Humanities Methods for Japanese studies

OutlineThis grant supports a workshop at Emory University that initiates collaboration between Japanese Studies specialists and Digital Humanities specialists. Emory hopes to increase literacy on both sides by exposing each party to the languages needed to communicate with one another. The goal for this collaboration is to create models that encourage the advancement of digital humanities research in the field of Japanese Studies.

Project TitleJapan Summer Experience: Pre-Freshman Travel Study to Japan

OutlineThrough this grant, approximately ten incoming freshmen will spend ten days in Japan prior to beginning their studies at Furman University. The goals of the project are to increase the number of Japan Studies students at Furman and to foster ties between the Department of Asian Studies and departments without Asian Studies faculty.

OutlineThis grant supports an interdisciplinary program consisting of two new courses on Japan, the purchase of materials to expand and enhance research opportunities currently unavailable to students, ten visiting presentations, and two films covering Japanese culture. This program is designed to appeal to students, faculty, and the greater Fredericksburg community.
