Outline This grant supports the creation of two tenure-track faculty positions (one in modern Japanese history and one in contemporary Japanese literature, linguistics, and language) and professional development for the two new faculty, including support for research travel to Japan and presentations at academic conferences. The grant also supports a Japanese speaker series at MSU and study abroad scholarships for students to Japan.

Outline This grant supports the South Florida Partnership in Japanese Studies (SFPJS), housed at Florida International University, which includes Florida Atlantic University (FAU), the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, and the Florida Delegation of the Southeast U.S./Japan Association. One component of the grant is the establishment of a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Japanese History with an emphasis on the pre-modern period and transnational issues. The new faculty member will expand studies of Japan as part of the Asian Studies Program at FIU. The grant will also support new course infusions at FIA and FAU, pre-modern vernacular library resources, publication support for the Japan Studies Review, an annual study tour to Japan, and research conferences/faculty development workshops for specialist and non-specialist faculty.
