Study-Tour DescriptionThis course examines the meeting of the ancient and the modern in the context of 21st century art, politics (political economy), culture and society in Okinawa, Japan. Exploring traditional arts and cultural practices as well as leading academic and scientific institutions in Okinawa, this class provides an in-depth look at aspects of Japanese society usually missed by outside observers.

Study-Tour DescriptionA 14-day field experience in Japan enables undergraduates to explore traditional spaces of Zen, Yamabushi-style, and Shingon, Buddhism in Kyoto, Kumano and Koyasan, respectively and to practice meditation with local teachers. A stay in the mountain hamlet of Kamikatsu will expose students to a community that is living intentionally simple and ecologically sustainable lives, guided by contemplative principles.
