About

Please join us for the World Peace Interfaith Gathering 2024 to
commemorate the 79th Year Anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings.

This year’s peace events have two parts:

1) The 31st Annual Interfaith Remembrance of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombings which will be Live Streaming programs on August 5 (Hiroshima Day) and August 8 (Nagasaki Day). This program includes watching commemoration in Hiroshima and Nagasaki live, and silent prayer on the moments when two atomic bombs were dropped to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

2) Beyond Hiroshima and Nagasaki: A Peace Gathering towards a World of Global Harmony which will be In-Person gatherings on August 9, 10 and 15. For the past 30 years, the ceremony has been held with a focus on remembering the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but from this year we have changed the shape of the programs to also think of the atomic bombings within the broader framework of creating a more peaceful future.

We will focus on creating bridges between the past, the present and the future by increasing cultural elements for children and young people. In response to ongoing wars around the world, we would like to raise the voices of peace and firmly convey the importance of peace from New York, the city where the Manhattan Project began.

Messages from the Mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will be read by representatives from associations of local NYC Japanese residents (NY Hiroshima-kai and Nagasaki Kenjin-kai). The event will also feature Theatric Play Face of Jizo by award-winning, renowned playwright Hisashi Inoue will be performed by Rino Aise and Eddy Toru Ohno (August 9 & 10).

We will have special exhibition of Kids Guernica Arts done by the children from Hiroshima, Nagasaki, US Military base in Sasebo in Kyushu, Irpin in Ukraine and Fujinomiya city on the foot of Mt. Fuji (thanks to Mr. Minoru Watanabe). The public will be able to see Kids Guerinca artworks at Dag Hammarskjord Plaza (10am-2pm) and Japan Society (2pm-6pm) on August 9; at St. Mark’s Church on August 10 (1:30pm-5:30pm) and August 11 (11am-3pm).
