This presentation will explore Japan’s rich culture of yokai: creatures from Japanese folklore that pop up in all sorts of places, from history to literature to anime and games to real life! Understanding the yokai will help you understand all sorts of things about Japanese daily life and culture.

Hiroko Yoda was born and raised in Tokyo and educated in the United States, at the University of Maryland and American University. She is the co-founder of the video game localization company AltJapan Co., Ltd. and an author of many books and articles about Japan. She co-authored Yokai Attack! The Japanese Monster Survival Guide and Japandemonium Illustrated: The Yokai Encyclopedias of Toriyama Sekien. Her articles have appeared on the CNN website, Vice and The New Yorker. She is hard at work on a new book about Japanese spiritual traditions.
Matt Alt is the co-founder of the video game localization company AltJapan. Born in Washington DC and raised in its suburbs, he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has lived in Tokyo since 2003 with his wife and partner Hiroko Yoda. He is a former co-host of the NHK World show Japanology Plus, a frequent writer for The New Yorker, and the author of the book Pure Invention: How Japan Made the Modern World (Crown, 2021).
