About

KinoSaito and The Japan Foundation, NY, co-present Akira (アキラ), a landmark Japanese animated film by Katsuhiro Otomo, at KinoSaito on Friday, August 12, 6-8:30 pm. This free film lecture, screening, and audience discussion program will take place in KinoSaito’s Theater at 115 7th Street in Verplanck. Seating is limited and advanced registrations are required.

Akira is a 1988 animated cyberpunk action film co-written by Otomo (born 1954) and Izo Hashimoto based on Otomo’s 1982 manga graphic novel of the same name. Set in a dystopian 2019, Akira tells the story of a biker gang leader whose childhood friend acquires telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident, eventually threatening an entire military complex amid chaos and rebellion in the sprawling futuristic metropolis of Neo-Tokyo. The soundtrack draws heavily from traditional Indonesian gamelan and Japanese noh music.
