Film Screening: Tawada Yoko’s Traveling Voices

Time and Location
October 23, 6pm
Heimbold 135, Sarah Lawrence College (Bronxville, NY)
About
Scholar Son HyeJeong joins Sarah Lawrence College for a screening of her new documentary, Tawada Yoko’s Traveling Voices, which follows the Japanese author Tawada Yoko as she tours the world doing performative readings of her multilingual fiction.
In the spring of 2010, Son, a Korean student living in Tokyo, became obsessed with the reading “voice” of Tawada, who writes bilingually in Japanese and German. Inspired by Tawada’s ideas about living in a “foreign” language, Son pursued academic research on the subject, eventually becoming both a filmmaker and a test subject herself and connecting with the world beyond her native language. Based on 10 years of “voice fieldwork” in 10 countries, the film follows Yoko Tawada and explores the nature of language and voice as a never-ending journey.
65 minutes, with English subtitles, followed by a Q&A with the director.
This event is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts and Culture.
