About

Ainu history and culture has centered for many centuries around a close connection with the natural environment and the spiritual realm. In this lecture, Professor Scott Bailey introduces the early history and traditional culture of the Ainu, including important historical developments, geography of Ainu settlement, and traditional cultural practices.

Professor Scott C.M. Bailey is an Associate Professor in the College of Global Engagement at Kansai Gaidai University. He teaches courses in the History of Modern Japan, 20th Century Asian History through Film, Asia in World History, History of Contemporary Japan, and related topics. In April 2023, he received Kansai Gaidai’s award for excellence in teaching, research, and contributions to the university, “The President’s Award for Global Education.”

Professor Bailey conducts research on the history of Japanese, Russian, and Indigenous cross-cultural interactions in the Sea of Okhotsk area during the early modern era. His research has been supported since 2018 by a generous grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (Kaken).
