About

The Japan Foundation is proud to present “Unspoken Gestures: The Films of Sho Miyake,” an international touring retrospective of director Sho Miyake’s films in eight countries across North America and Europe from November 2026 through February 2027. Dir. Miyake himself will travel to each city to meet new audiences.

Co-presented by Metrograph, the NYC part of the retrospective will run from Nov. 7-15 with Sho Miyake appearing in-person for Nov. 7 and 8! We will screen not only his works of his career to date but also the Carte Blanche titles selected by himself.

Following the New York program, Miyake will travel to Oklahoma from Nov. 9-11 to participate in screenings and lead a masterclass (not open to the public) at the University of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.

He has remained a constant and significant presence in contemporary Japanese cinema for the past decade. From his early works—such as Good for Nothing and Playback, which foreshadowed the emergence of a new master—to his latest film, Two Seasons, Two Strangers, which won the Golden Lion at the Locarno Film Festival in 2025, his films have garnered attention in Japan with every release and have attracted numerous fans, transcending generations and appealing particularly to younger audiences in Asia.

Miyake, who describes the work of a film director as “taking on the responsibility of creating images of humanity,” has consistently turned his gaze through the medium of cinema, toward the demeanor of people living within a community or landscape, as well as the unspoken gestures that are often overlooked in daily life. We, too, are among the audience members who were once struck and moved by his gaze. We sincerely hope to bring that sense of wonder and emotion to as many viewers as possible in theaters around the world.
