About

Music From Japan Festival 2026 New York will commence this February 12 at New York’s Scandinavia House featuring, and in collaboration with, Momenta Quartet. The evening will celebrate the rich history of works for string quartet written by Japanese Composers, as well as feature new works commissioned especially for the occasion.

The first concert, MFJ Commissions for String Quartet: Past and Present, will take place on Thursday, February 12th at 7:00pm, and include thrilling new works by composers Michiru Nakamura and Shintaro Shibayama commissioned specifically for the evening. In addition, a rich repertoire of past MFJ commissions will be revisited, dating back to a 1991 piece by Somei Satoh, originally performed by Kronos Quartet. Works by Hikaru Hayashi, Chiku Komiya, and Madoka Mori will also be played.

The string quartet is typically considered the epitome of western chamber music and Music From Japan would like to show how these composers have successfully overcome its many challenges. The distinguished Momenta Quartet, who over their illustrious career have collaborated with more than 250 living composers and played over 200 world premieres, will perform the entire program.

The second concert, MFJ Commissions and Other Works for String Quartet will take place on Wednesday, February 18 at Binghamton University Art Museum, and will feature student composers works, as well as a repeat performance of Shintaro Shibayama and Michiru Nakamura’s compositions.
