About

The 50th Anniversary Celebration for Music From Japan will commence with the Inaugural Performance by Gagaku Ensemble Toki no Koe along with Five New Commissions for its Festival 2025 New York in February at the Scandinavia House.

The Festival will open on Friday, February 21st at 7:00 pm with a pre-concert lecture by a world renowned sho soloist Mayumi Miyata, who formed this exciting new gagaku ensemble Toki no Koe, making their debut performance for the occasion. The group will play millennium old classics and three commissions by MFJ, including world premieres by Osamu Kawakami and Tetsuya Yamamoto.

Beginning at 5:00pm on Saturday, February 22nd, CURRENT SOUNDS JAPAN V will introduce US audiences to three exhilarating young composers: Mariko Endo, whose work explores the rhythms of contemporary society, Noel Hiyamizu, whose extensive knowledge of traditional instruments manifests in their use in his work and Makoto Ohata, whose deep interest in the Kagura music of the Tohoku district has greatly influenced his work. Each composition will be a world or US premiere and, as always, some of the most distinguished musicians in the New York area will be performing. A pre-concert lecture will be given by Miyuki Shiraishi
