About

Noh Society presents a monthly webinar series on Noh and Bunraku this fall.

Bunraku is known for its expressive combination of storytelling, music, and puppetry. This session will focus on each element—the chanter (tayu), the shamisen (joruri), and the puppeteer. The tayu describes the scene in addition to speaking for the character. The shamisen expresses the sounds of nature as well as the emotions of a scene. Three puppeteers work together to realize the movements of each puppet. It is a seamless and creative combination of these facets, which creates the magical world of Bunraku.

The guest presenters will include Takemoto Kosumidayu (tayu), Tsuruzawa Kantaro (shamisen), and Kiritake Kanjiro (puppeteer).
